The Dover Home Thread - Revenge at Stonehenge?

I would like to thank all the morons at Dover for all their idiotic insults and outrageous and unfounded accusations that helped galvanise our team and produce the most focussed Dartford side that I have seen for many years. I cant recall everyone wanting to win a match so badly for a very long time and this was undoubtedly down to the slanderous drivel that came out of the pathetic "Rabble from the Crabble". When we went to Dover I was impressed that they still have such a large following despite falling down the leagues like we have. Perhaps the fact that they still have their old ground and that this has been improved has helped them. Their team looked very good, better than ours, and although we are improving, deep down I expected to lose this tie. We battled well at the Crabble though, and this effort was rewarded with the replay. Dover's reaction to ths draw was nothing short of pathetic. Arrogant whingers with no humility, they have excuses for everything and thoroughly deserved to be dumped out the Trophy on their backsides last night. My admiration for Dover has trasformed to disgust and I sincerely hope they end up winning nothing this season because that is what the miserable bunch of whingers deserve. The Darts were fantastic last night. I've not had so much fun at a match in ages. Make no mistake, we are a club on our way back to glory and its only a matter of time before we catch and pass that rabble from the crabble.

What a great night, wonderful support and a result to please all Darts fans and the atmosphere can only be compared to the great cup runs at Watling Street in the past.

We had our doubts when we went behind for the first goal due to poor marking and Dover utilising their skills from set pieces and crosses, but then came an equalizer, some what lucky, but Davey Martin got on the end of the free kick due to their goalie hesitating and hooked the ball home.

Back behind again after a brief celebration, this time due to a lot of luck from a hard hit shot which took a wicked deflection off of a defender into the corner of the net.

But did we give up, no and with more noise and singing right through to half time we grabbed another equalizer two minutes into injury time when Stevie Hafner tucked the ball away from close range.

Tony's half time talk was put to the test within minutes of the restart (what would Dover do if we took the lead) when right in front of the bulk of us vocal supporters/posters under the stand on the left hand side, Stevie Hafner collected the ball on the touchline cut inside and ran across the front edge of the box and hit a curling sreamer into the top corner of the net via the underside of the crossbar.

As he beat the defenders on his run it looked almost as if he had knocked the ball too far ahead and that he would lose possession but with perfect timing he swung the boot and the result was there for all to see goal of the season or otherwise it was in the net and we were in front.

Dover came back fighting but as the game dragged on it was less and less football from them and more and more long punts in the air into the box in the hope of their aerial dominance creating a goal.

Our defence stood firm although we gave away several corners to put our nerves further on edge, but whenever we cleared the ball forward we were pressing Dover with our pace and on several occassions saw two players breaking  with the ball being played through to run onto and just lacking the finish that would have clinched the game.

Jimmy hit the bar with a header and Richard Avery put the rebound just over, otherwise that was the nearest we came to increasing the lead.

Several minutes of Dover time had to be played before we heard the final whistle and the celebrations could begin, the players running over to the area where we  vocalists were all standing joining in the singing and cheering with us, befrore acknowledging the rest of the supporters around the ground.

Well done Darts and thanks for jogging the memories and bringing back to me the days of old.

In the bar afterwards I was talking to Mr & Mrs Carter about James (please accept my apologies for keep calling him Jimmy  ) and I said that I had never seen him give so much and run so many times backwards as well as forwards in a match and they said that he looked absolutely exhausted.

Well done to him and all of the team, they gave 100% and got the result that we all wanted a trip down to Margate, where I know we will be welcomed and it will be a good day out for both clubs whatever the result, with loads of the same atmosphere as tonight.

I would hope that we will see in excess of the 150 fans who I believe travelled to Dover, so don't miss out on the day, lets enjoy the vibes whilst it lasts and let it get us in the right frame of mind for next season and the return to Dartford and Princes Park

In my short 20 months of being part of the DFC experience, that was by far the most entertaining 100 minutes that I've seen played.

The whole team played as one. Eddie McClements I thought had his best match in ages, as did Briggs. JC ran & ran all night, Hayes provided a physical threat that Dover found hard to Deal with (get it?, Deal?) and as for the back 4 and Hafner and Hudson, well well done one and all.

Now on to Dover - I have had a sneaky look this morning on their Forum. Isn't it strange how quiet they've been this morning? They're normally such an oppinionated bunch!

They are looking for excuses and missing the main ones. They're team on the night was just not up to the job. Sure they went ahead twice but on each occasion let in soft goals within minutes. They whinged & moaned everytime they got tackled and played like what I'm beginning to expect they are, a bunch of overpaid, tired players. For this I'd have to point you in the direction of your manager Clive "Mr Burns" Walker. Instead of shouting at the players, trying to fire them up, he seemed to spend most of the game walking up and down the touchline in his Columbo outfit like some American Basketball coach. All I saw him do was moan. This is a negative attitude which eventually will filter down through the squad.

What we saw last night was a good, competitive no holds barred cup tie and great entertainment for £7. Finally it was nice to chat to one or two of the Dover fans before the game. Good luck for the rest of your season.

We're all going to Margate, We're all going to Margate, la la la la, la la la la

Directors in slanging match as Darts go through

by Tony Hudd
Dartford 3 - 2 Dover Athletic

EXTRAORDINARY scenes accompanied Dartford's 3-2 defeat of old rivals Dover in Tuesday's FA Trophy, first qualifying round replay at Stonebridge Road as both sets of directors hurled abuse at each other.

Throughout there had been an unpleasant undercurrent running through the sequel to Saturday's first, fiesty encounter at Crabble, where the home side lost Craig Cloke with a broken leg.

Tuesday's sequel erupted on and off the field in the 65th minute following a challenge by Dartford match-winner Steve Hafner on Dover defender Shane Hamshare who was carried off on a stretcher with suspected ligament damage in his left knee.

Both sets of players were involved in a free-for-all in front of the two directors' boxes. Off the field, opposing directors traded insults which ended with Dover declining after-match hospitality and leaving at the final whistle.

Six players were cautioned - three from either side - while Croydon referee Rob Smith had his work cut out keeping order as tempers simmered fractionally below boiling point.

Dartford manager Tony Burman, who endured the frustration of seeing the series of incidents overshadow his team's considerable feat of eclipsing Dover, confessed: "The tie did get close to getting out of control but what disappointed me most was the behaviour of certain individuals off the field.

"It was unfortunate that Dover suffered injuries on Saturday and another tonight but none of my players went out there with any malicious intent."

All Dover manager Clive Walker would say was: "We wanted a cup run and everyone at the club is disappointed to have lost tonight."

Dover, desperate to win the replay and set up a money-spinning East Kent derby with arch-rivals Margate at Hartsdown Park on November 12, twice held the lead through goals from Anthony Hogg and Michael Smissen.

Dave Martin scored Darts' first equaliser before Hafner scored twice either side of half time, his second a spectacular 30 yard drive.

I am sad to have to report that the attendance for last night's game was underquoted. Instead of 323 it was actually 323.5.

I sneaked in just after the re-start but I will of course, offer my £3.50 to a director on Saturday.

I have just one more thing to comment about the Dover 'situation'. They are touting us as thugs and moaning about the 'Another one bites the dust' quip (which I might add although I know it was done in humour I did not join in Re:Syko -  I never moan at 'injured' players since that day).

Anyway back on track what I was going to say was, with all those derogatory comments, does anyone remember the tune played before the players came on the pitch at the crabble?

It was 'I predict a riot' and I'm not making that up.

I have to laugh at some of the grief Dover fans are giving their manager over their tactics. They have played 8 and won 7 in the league for crying out loud. They really are struggling aren't they? Excellent website though. It would of course be nice for us to have the same but it is a lot of effort and dedication, full marks to them for that.

Anyway, on to Margate - a much nicer bunch from memory, maybe because they do not have delusions of grandeur and they share a similar history to us. Will Buster Bloodvessel be there?

Dover chairman says ;

Quote
"It is no coincidence that during two games, we've ended up with all our key players getting crocked. It's a shame that football has become like this.

"If that was the way Dartford wanted to play, I said during the match 'let them have the game'. I don't want to be associated with football being played like that."

All through this season so far we have mentioned the need for a hard strong ball winner in the Horan mould because we felt that we needed a bit more beef in midfield, thank goodness we didn't have one for if Dover are to be believed they probably wouldn't have had any players left on the field had we that type of player.

So our team just played on Saturday/Tuesday in their normal way battling for the ball (as they do week in week out) but we had a determination to win the ball and luck went with us in respect of the tackles and we came out injury free save for a few knocks.

Not a dirty game but I would ask the question are some of their players too old or is it as often quoted some are too fit (not that I understand the statement) but we only have to think back to the Tommy Sampson days when he took pride in the fact that he had a very fit team with some older players and a few youngsters and you can remember we often picked up two and on occassions three injuries in a game.

This league of ours is a physical one and we have to battle in each game as do our opponents, where as I suspect that Dover enjoy teams in the Ryman league who tend to play more football.

We must stay competitive and retain this sort of form in the league, so take what Dover say with a pinch of salt and lets get on with the games, I'm sure our opponents will confirm that we play a keen but fair game of football and we win some and lose some as the results show, but we are determined to win alot more in the future in our push for a top 6 spot.

I am pleased to report that Dave & Bill have spoken to Jeremy and the specification for Princes Park has been upgraded to include a boxing ring in the gym so that the Dover directors can enjoy the after match hospitalities and that hair/hand driers will be placed in both ladies and gents wc's so that we can remain silent but combat the hot air with our own devices.

I'd like to think that our board are above this sort of thing. The Dover chairman is obviously a complete idiot to have made such comments. These were not dirty games and the senile old muppet is deluding himself. It is disgusting that such stupid and unfounded remarks should be made by someone who is supposed to be a chairman. Nobody wants to see players get injured, but these things happen sometimes and to react in the way that Dover have is shameful. The officials at Dover were guilty of whipping up a hate campaign to try and cover for their team's failure to beat a supposedly weaker side and their comments are nothing short of slanderous. The league should take action against them for the inflammatory comments that they have made. Get the report from both referees and look at an unbiased view and charge these people with bringing the game into disrepute. Their foul mouthed manager's interview on Radio Kent was shameful. Dover would be better served by sorting out their own problems like ejecting that idiot who ran on the pitch and tried to start a fight last week. Instead, the smiling stewards just escorted him back to his fellow neanderthals. Come to think of it, maybe that thug was one of the directors, it wouldn't surprise me judging by the comments coming from officials at the club. I think their chairman needs to go and see a professional who can get him to lay down in a quiet room and answer questions about the relationship he had with his mother. Maybe then we can get to the bottom of all this pent up aggression and sort out the poor chap's problems. Shame on you Dover.
