This day was everything I had hoped for and more, made all the better by the exceptional hospitality offered by the Margate people, from the turnstile operators and stewards, to the bar staff and of course a big thankyou to the fans as well
Several of their fans spoke to me and others before the game in the bar, during the game on the terrace and offered congratulations at the end, despite the result and the obvious bad patch that their team are going through at the moment.
Fans just like The Darts who have had their ground troubles and money worries, but are now just about to start building a hotel complex at Hartsdown Road, good luck to you all for the rest of the season, plus I would like to think that both clubs could meet again soon home and away within our new stadiums.
As for the game what can I say other than well done to the team and to the management for a very very good result, into the next round and some more cash for the coffers.
The whole team battled from start to finish and my only disappointmet was that we should have at least scored two goals to ease the pressure on the manager and fans, a point stressed after the game by Tony Burman in an interview with Radio Kent.
We almost took the lead when Jimmy side footed a cross wide when unmarked early on, then Davie Martin scored, a cross from Gary Carter (a much improved performance today) was flicked on by Jimmy and from the edge of the box a diagonal well placed shot along the ground found the far corner of the net.
A chance right on half time saw Jimmy break clean through into the box but he seemed more intent on going for the penalty than shooting as a defender closed him down from behind and got the tackle in, with the referee not being impressed. (Full marks to the ref for an excellent game)
Margate had several chances to score in the first half including hitting the post, with most coming from dangerous crosses and miss-timed headers going wide and this was the biggest threat again second half.
But our defence was standing firm, Avery and Henry showing ther class and when they were beaten others from midfield or defence were there to cover, plus of course Kevin Hudson showed his usual experience being in the right place at the right time and pulling off several good saves.
We should have added a second when Spriggsy got into a great scoring position outside the box and hit a sreamer just over the bar, Davie Martin had an open goal for a header which flashed just wide of the far post plus Eddie made chances for himself.
But as they say one was enough and the Darts fans went home happy after singing for the entire 90 minutes, orchestrated and conducted by Anfield 070 (Graham) most of us hoarse, leaving little conversation in the car going home other than listening on the radio to Tony modest as ever and hearing Chris Kinnear moaning about his bad luck over the last 3 years and having no money to spend.
Still they have survived as a team with a new ground coming soon, what has he to moan about after 3 years, we Darts fans in a similar situation again shortly to receive a new ground, have been waiting for nearly 14 years without moaning too much.
