The Great Wakering Rovers Away Thread

Quote from: Mad Mod

Many will say we should look to play our own game against this lesser opposition but our management team are not so naive as to disrespect any team in this tight league.

I agree, we can't afford to disrespect teams in this league, today was a great example.  Many of us fans went thinking "easy 3 points, crap team, etc, etc".  Watching them today they are far from that, they played some good attacking football and were desperately unlucky not to get a point.  If teams that lowly in the league are as good as them, we need to be on top form every game!

If this was the other way around and we had lost playing like Wakering we would have travelled home absolutely gutted!

I don't want to get into the formation debate as we've already had it, I'm with kebabus and can take or leave formations.  I will say though that we've had 2 clean sheets in a row, away, against good teams playing 4-5-1.  With 4-4-2 we seemed to win big or lose big, but we always seem to concede.

Now we have Wimbledon in 2 games time and to get anything from the game I'm sure most will agree that we have to keep a solid team and will probably have to play 4-5-1 against them.  So IMO we should stick with that against Wivenhoes as it would be unstable to keep switching.  After the wombles TB can take another look at the situation and do what's best for the team(as he has against Margate and Wakering).

Another observation from today. A great clean sheet from Super Kev, made 3 or 4 superb saves and when he was beaten a great saving header from Tommy Osbourne.  That's why Dover wanted him as their new number 1!  They conceded 3 today I believe!

The famous Kevin Hudson went to Dover to sign a deal,
The famous Kevin Hudson went to Dover to sign a deal,
The famous Kevin Hudson went to Dover to sign a deal,
and this is what he said....
F@*K OFF!
Who's that team we call the Dartford?
Who's that team we all adore?
We're the boys in Black and White!
And we'll fight with all our might,
And we're going to show the world the way to score.

Agree with Mod/TLD, particularly about GWR. I've felt that both times we've played them that their position in the league is a bit harsh, given their performances against us. We've seen worse teams this season, and will still see worse teams than them.

A WIN, A WIN, A WIN, any way, any how, we'll always take the win and 3 points away from home, but it's so frustrating for the fans to last for 90 minutes watching the team mostly in our half punting the ball up field for Jimmy to flick on to nobody or franticly defending and throwing bodies in front of the ball.

It was our lucky day, no two ways about it, Kevin chose this game to perform at his brilliant best and the defence kept a clean sheet, thanks to a goal line clearance by Tommy Osbourne fairly early on, as he jumped and grew some how above his normal height to head out from under the bar.

We were most dangerous in the first 10 minutes and looked good passing the ball out of defence and Eddie went on a couple of dangerous runs, but hit tame shots along the ground.

Then the game changed and we struggled from then on to string our passes together and resorted too often to the long ball punted up field in desperation.

Second half saw us get one of the few attacks down the right and Haffy (I think) fired in a low hard cross from near the corner flag which seemed to cannon off Jimmy's leg (I think) at the near post and caused the ball to run under a defenders miss timed kick to Eddie who fired in well from just outside the six yards box.

Jimmy ran his heart out again winning the high balls against a very tall defender without getting into a scoring position and when you look at the end result the team did what was asked of them by T.B. (absent watching Wimbledon) play 4-5-1 and go for the point and anything else is a bonus.

As The Duke  has said on more than one occasion Darts need to learn how to grind out a result and today was that day, although it kept the fans on a knife edge for most of the time.

As we are at Wivenhoe on Tuesday I will have to rush from H.O. Fairford in Glos (150 miles and M25) and to be honest having watched the game today I am not looking forward to a game played with the same formation as this one, but it's results that count and as others have said it is unlikely to be changed before the Wimbledon game, so lets grind out two results on the trot and I would definitely take another 3 points.

WELL DONE DARTS

some really good postings on the 4-5-1 formation and i accept it is currently a very effectictive way to get points [ often 3] away from home

i agree with trevB that it is getting to the stage where i an support the team AWAY more out of loyalty than the belief that i am going to see a really good footballing experience

the past 3/4 games at home [ 4-4-2 applying] have been worth every penny of the entrance fee + extras and we have seen some decent football , which believe it or not is why i actually go

no i do not want to see us playing great football and losing but i believe the two long term do actually go hand in hand

i also easily accepyt that TB is top man and knows what he is doing and he keeps refering to long term which i guess is nearer to my hopes

UP THE DARTS and a solid performance at wivenhoe on tuesday and YES like many other loyal darts fans i will be there  !!!

Eh? You're seeing the team away more out of loyalty, even though we're in the top 10, still in Non League's premier cup competition and winning games away? I won't understand that. For me, going out of loyalty ended just under a year ago, when we were playing badly both at home, and away and winning neither at home, nor away.

I'm not saying I enjoyed the football, but neither did I go out of "loyalty". I went to support the team, and hope for a favourable result. I would quite happily pay to see us in scrappy wins rather than play well and draw/lose.

Quite agree, Gary.  Although, I admit to getting a little frustrated yesterday but only because I care again.  We aren't being dished up with the same old dirge (bar the odd moment) week in, week out as was the case under messers Julians and Sampson.  Give me occasional crumby performances away from home.  At least I feel now that the vast majority of players are worthy of wearing the famous black and white.  We have some exciting ball players and a capable defence.  The fact that we could possibly scrape into the play-offs is a huge turnaround on the last decade of mind numbing, unadulterated, dross.
