There was always going to be of an over-reaction to such a disappointing defeat, and Duke my old mate, you've just about taken this week's biscuit! To infer the players were cheating is well OTT and verging on Dover talk. My advice (from bitter experience) is when you feel that angry about a game, you should sleep on it before you post.
I was thinking on my way home on Saturday what I would have done differently to what TB did in terms of the team selected. On the basis that Briggsy must have been unavailable, then I'd have probably gone for exactly the same starting eleven. As we all know, TB is spot on for preparation, training etc, so I wouldn't have done anything differently there either.
It was one of those games, where the spark just didn't happen. I was bitterly disappointed that no-one in our side was prepared to get hold of the game by the scruff of the neck and demand that we win it. Everyone was just looking for someone else to take responsibility.
I think a lot if it is down to confidence too. Recently, someone else has got hold of the game, perhaps Dave or Ryan skinning the fullback and putting in a great cross or shot to put us in front and inspire us. It just didn't happen on Saturday, and the inexperience and dented confidence in the side meant that no-one felt confident enough to step up and take that responsibility. Not much of an excuse I guess, but that's how I saw it anyway.
As Spike has said, we need to keep the entire season in perspective. At the start, we'd have all been well chuffed to be in the top half, let alone play-off contention. As I see it, all that matters is that we will be playing at Princes Park next season, with the nucleus of an excellent young side already in place. Perhaps this is why I'm not too hung up that Brendan is taking a while to settle in. I'm still convinced that he's quality and will score a hatful of goals at Princes Park. Bearing in mind the maturity of the team, they are entitled to a few off days. Not too many though!
Up the Darts!
