having been grouped with the " negative ones " who were not desperate for promotion this season ...
Duke, the two groups to which you refer consisted of those of us that "wanted" promotion and those that "didn't". I don't recall anyone saying they were "desperate" for promotion, only that if it came along we should grab it with both hands. The debate was not about the achievement itself, but the perceived "lack of ambition" versus the counter "run before you can walk" argument. i.e. The fact that we tried and failed is, by and large, acceptable to people in both camps. To most of us however, not to try would have been deplorable. If we were "desperate" for anything, it was confirmation of the club's
desire, not promotion itself.
Thankfully, as far as I know, all of the the club officials and management (certainly the ones I have spoken to)
were firmly committed to trying to go up and the players clearly gave their best, hence we were still in with a shout right down to the final whistle of the last game of the season. This was enough to keep most people happy and now that its over I don't think many of us will be losing any sleep over the fact that we narrowly missed out. It is now all about next season and I just hope we can keep this squad together because with the extra year's experience, I genuinely think we are only one or two players away from a side capable of winning automatic promotion next season.
