Well although not the best of performances by the lads it was certainly a real gutsy performance with a never say die attitude and thats all you can ask from them, well that and to stop conceding goals from set pieces of course.

At the end of the day we came away with the 3pts again which is what was required so job done, as for the sending off's there was no doubt that both Tommy Adlington & Jay May were going to get their marching orders, Tom for the punch & Jay for the retaliation on Tom by pushing him with both hands in the back and flattening him.
The ref gave Tom a straight red and then had to speak to his assistant to find out what happend with Jay, another Ashford player No 11 i think it was got very very lucky not to get a straight red as well after he also threw a punch at 1 of our players but again after speaking to his assistant the ref only gave a yellow.

Some very poor decisions by the ref at times especially their penalty decision i couldn't see what that was for at all and as for the lino's flag for offside when Cassy scored that was utter rubbish as Brendan didn't even move until the ball had been kicked and had to turn and run at goal to get his head on the ball.

Still im not going to go on about it we won the game 4-3 (if a bit lucky), the Ashford keeper pulled off a fantastic reaction save just before we got the winner, how he got his hand to the ball i'll never know as he'd done nothing but drop the ball and mess up all game especially when we levelled at 3-3 from Lew Watts long range effort. Then just after this we hit the bar from Jimmy Carters header and Davie goes on one of his excellant runs jinking and beating 2 defenders, getting into the box and winning us the penalty for Ryno to slot away in front of yet another fantastic 1470 crowd, it just keeps getting bigger & bigger.

Great entertainment although not good for the heart, certainly you get value for money at Princes Park and as Tony mentioned on Radio Kent tonight "The Council have asked him to make it exciting, The Board have told him to make it exciting and you CAN'T GET ANYMORE EXCITING THAN THAT."

Well Done Tony & the management team and WELL DONE to all the DFC players.

GREAT STUFF. :-D

Give Ashford their due although they were a very physical and at times a dirty team they did give us 1 hell of a game and probably didn't deserve to lose.

They certainly shouldn't be in the league position that they currently are in and should be at least a mid table side pushing near the top (probably a top 10 side) and IF they won their games in hand they would climb the table to be in a middle position.

To be honest i thought they were far better than the likes of Chatham, Horsham YMCA, Burgess Hill and even Fleet. Come the end of the season im sure they will have climbed the table a few places.

i feel a bit short changed only seeing 7 goals when i am used to 9 :-)
another superb game, ashford fully deserved their 2 goal lead.at 2 down i thought it was cutains as we wernt playing well at all.but thankfully jay scored right after their second to keep us in the game.we were briliant in the second half and even  3-2 down i still had us to win. dave martin was always going to do something to win the game and his mazy run did it for the pen.the brilliant ryan hayes took the ball straight away for the pen and that was it game over.ryan was buzzing all through the game but sometimes we were a bit slow to give him the ball when he was totally unmarked.when aplayer is buzzing give him the ball.forget shouts of FEED THE GOAT the new shout is FEED THE RYNO.he is simply superb, give him the ball and he will do damage.he is almost scoring direct from corners, what a left foot.

i have one dissapointment of the day and have thought long and hard before mentioning it.i am not debating it but just wish to say what i  heared. i dont want to confront the idiot or call a steward because i have better things to do like watching a match.during the sending offs some moron behind me shouted two or three times SEND THE NIGGER OFF.in todays prog our chairman said racist comments strictly forbidden and in the week when racism hits the front pages and news progs we have an idiot using that word.wherever you sit or stand at PP there is a small child within feet of you and you should be ashamed of yourself NEANDERTHAL MAN ,cut it out.

Another great afternoon's entertainment at PP--no complaints about the 2 sending offs--I was actually worried that the officials hadn't seen the initial offence and it was just going to be only the Darts who were punished.

Like some other posters I always had a feeling we would turn it around today--there seems to be a passion and belief that wasn't there in the early days at PP. I know Davie is getting all the headlines but I think Lew has done a great job filling in at Centre Back, and is now showing his goascoring skills !!  How important the points gained today, the equaliser against Dover and the comeback against the Met Police will be we'll only know come May but you've gotta be impressed with the spirit they are showing.
Got to admit like a lot of others I am a returning fan--I did used to go to Watling St and am thoroughly enjoying having my local team back in the town-I do however take my hat off to the diehards who kept the faith through the nomadic years. I salute you !!!!

Not sure about anyone else but i thought Briggsy had a great game today in midfield, and although all the players gave every effort and 100% commitment today im going to give my MOTM vote to Ryan Briggs.

Well Done to Lew Watts today as well who (i think) picked up the Patrons Club MOTM Award today.

5th Don't think we can moan much about the sending off , but to me jay come running make sure tommy didn't go back, as he looked for seconds. When he went to push tommy away they tripped over each other, that was why they went down. The only defence I have for jay is he was they only one in the melee after that was trying to keep players apart, did this not show that he had no other intention than to stop any trouble? Video evidence anyone? It helped dover the other week.

The ref didn't make many decisions , as it was obvious the lino was in charge. The only reason for giving offside against cassie was because he thought it was flicked on, and from where he and the ref was they would not have seen.

As for the keeper making a great save! He fell over and it hit his hip, he didn't have a clue

Not keen on giving penalties for handballs and silly contact, but my one golden rule I go by is it is a penalty if a clear goal scoring oppurtunity was denied. Definite penalty even though it was more ball to hand it was a clear shot at goal.

totally agree with you about Briggsy, but as I only made it to the ground as we equalised for 2-2, so I never see the first half. But we looked great in the 2nd. Briggsy played well ,Guest looked solid and so did Watts so unsure which of these to give it to.

Is it me or ,silly goals aside, we seem to have developed some fight and pride in the last couple of months? Is this purely the PP effect?

I cant make molsey as I am on nights but for all those coaching it to the game I will make sure you have a copy of the goals from the Burgess Hill game and some of the highlights from the start of the season to watch, as Sonytino has been doing a bit of videoing and between us we have both been equally inept at putting the footage of the game on youtube! Thanks Sonytino, I'll take the footage to the next home game and see if they will put it on in the bar as well , so make sure you're there.

I'm sure that Tony must now make the defence a priority. After yesterdays performance, Ashford looked dangerous every time they went foward. Don't like Wattsy at the back, even though he scores goals like that. The forward line can look after itself, but largely shows you that Cassie is ineffectual without Jay. I feel that 'Peanuts' Carter should be given more time on the pitch.I felt he could have been put on earlier against Burgess Hill. If Tony don't want him out there, ship him off somewhere so the guy can get match fit.

Coney, i think you need to re-read my comments as theres not a single bit of moaning in it at all and i'd already made the following comments:
Quote
as for the sending off's there was no doubt that both Tommy Adlington & Jay May were going to get their marching orders, Tom for the punch & Jay for the retaliation on Tom by pushing him with both hands in the back and flattening him.

I think this covers the fact i wasn't moaning about the sending off's and that the ref had to ask the lino about both Jay's card & Walid Matata's yellow card. :-D

As for Jay trying to stop Tommy from going back for more i don't believe that, Jay knew exactly what he was doing and retaliated for the punch on Ryno so he stupidly deserved to go as well. If he was trying to stop Adlington then he would've just stood right in front of him.

I thought Ashford played very well but I disagree that we deserved to be 2-0 down. The ref constantly had the whistle in his mouth, and consequently every time he breathed out, somebody got a free kick. It was stop start as a result of this and we struggled to get a rhythm going. Their first goal, surprise surprise, came from one of the aforementioned petty free kicks. Then they got their second, but I still had every confidence we would win, when Jay got the deflected goal just before half time, I was certain we would win. My Grandad was having none of it though, too many Watling Street struggles under his belt to have my blind faith.

Well this time Grandad, I was right - just. That's 1 million to you and 1 to me.

I have brought it up before but why is it that we have quite competant individuals in defence, but we constantly fail to deal with balls put into our box? I wouldn't swap Guest for Henry but it does seem strange since Henry's departure the flood gates have opened.

Briggs had one of his best games for us and I thought McClements was simply outstanding. He is different class and we are a completely different team with him in the side. Although Hayes pushes Macca for my MOTM, Macca edged it. Special mention for Hayes for total composure, last minute penalty, in front of 1,400 people to win the game, it was as if he was in his back garden slotting it between the tree and the washing line.

Strangely, though the ref didn't let the game flow, we have witnessed a thoroughly exciting afternoon at PP. Fantastic days.

Kentish Websites Report On The Ashford Match
« Reply #87 on: January 21, 2007, 01:17:01 PM »

Here is the full report from Stephen McCartney on yesterdays match, which i personally thought was very good & fair:

MATCH OF THE SEASON: Dartford 4-3 Ashford Town - Martin says goodbye in seven-goal thriller

Saturday, 20 January 2007

DARTFORD  4-3 ASHFORD TOWN
Ryman League Division One South
Saturday 20th January 2007
Stephen McCartney reports from Princes Park

Dartford's fans gave their departing hero Dave Martin, 21, a standing ovation following this epic seven goal thriller at Princes Park today.

The lightening quick, left-winger, who was plucked out of Kent League football at Slade Green by Tony Burman, is expected to sign for either Championship side Crystal Palace – managed by former Dart Peter Taylor - or League One outfit Millwall this week.

The Darts, now unbeaten in eight games, winning their last four, will hold a press conference at Princes Park on Tuesday morning.

But Martin said goodbye to the Ryman League Division One South club by winning an injury time penalty as the Darts won the best game played in Kent this season.

A crowd of 1,470, Dartford’s eighth successive four-figure crowd since coming home in November,  received full value for money as second placed Dartford defeated an Ashford Town side that, on recent displays, should be higher than their position in the bottom two.

Following an uneventful opening twenty minutes, Ashford found themselves deservedly 2-0 up to stun the Darts faithful after 36 minutes through Ken Jarrett-Elliott and Walid Matata before Darts hit back through Jay May just two minutes later.

But May levelled for the Darts eight minutes into the second half with his seventeenth goal of the season to bring the home side back on level terms before Matata became the first player to score from the penalty spot at this stunning stadium to give Ashford the lead again after 58 minutes.

But a seventeen-man brawl, which resulted in straight red cards for Tom Adlington and May saw both sides reduced to ten-men.

Dartford’s central defender, Lew Watts scored his second goal of the season from two yards inside his own half to make this enthralling clash 3-3.

Dartford’s amazing comeback, however, was completed when right-sided winger, Ryan Hayes, kept his composure to score his 12th goal of the season with a last gasp penalty.

But watching the opening twenty minutes you would not have predicted that a seven-goal epic being the outcome.

Ashford star midfielder, Matt Carruthers, who finished the game playing at the heart of their defence, had a couple of chances before they deservedly broke the deadlock after 21 minutes.

Dartford’s experienced goalkeeper Kevin Hudson did well to tip Carruthers’ 35-yard, right-footed free-kick onto his crossbar but Jarrett-Elliott was on hand to steer the ball home for his second goal of the campaign.

It took Dartford 31 minutes to fashion their first chance of the game.

Central midfielder, Eddie McClements drove a left-footed effort from 25-yards, but Jake Whincip was on hand to make a comfortable save as the ball bounced once in front of him.

But a piece of magic from Matata, the former Dover Athletic and Folkestone Invicta striker, opened his goalscoring account for Ashford after 36 minutes.

In fact, the lightening quick striker had scored in games against Hastings United and Cray Wanderers in recent weeks, but both goals were wiped out as those games were abandoned due to waterlogged pitches.

The highly-rated striker cut in from the left, left three defenders in a daze, before rolling the ball past Hudson from 12-yards.

Luckily for the Tottenham resident there were blue skies above the stunning £6.5m stadium - fit for exciting games like this.

But Dartford hit back almost immediately when May’s 25-yard drive took a deflection of defender Marc Cumberbatch to leave Ashford’s much-travelled 21-year-old goalkeeper stranded.

Cumberbatch almost made amends when he shot straight at Hudson at the near post, following Jarrett-Elliott’s corner.

At the half-time break you could sense that these two good sides would produce more drama.

Ashford’s manager, John Cumberbatch emerged from the tunnel during the half-time interval to pass on instructions to 32-year-old substitute, defender, Graham Porter.

Cumberbatch was forced to watch the second half from the away officials section at the back of the stand as he was sent-off by Crawley based referee, Mr Warren Atkin during his half-time team talk.

With Porter thrown in at the deep end issuing instructions from the technical area, the visitors created their first chance of the season half after just 45 seconds.

Matata intercepted a loose ball from Hayes and burst forward towards goal, but his 20-yard effort rolled to Hudson.

Dartford were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the D but Hayes’ left-footed free-kick took a deflection over.

But Dartford drew level from the resulting 53rd minute corner when May glanced home Hayes’ excellent corner kick.

The equaliser brought Dartford back into life and Ashford lost their composure for a short time.

Darts leading scorer, Brendon Cass, endured a quiet day but he should have tucked away Ryan Briggs’ free-kick but missed the target from six-yards.

But Ashford were awarded a penalty after 58 minutes when Marc Cumberbatch was flattened inside a crowded penalty area following Anthony Allman’s free-kick out on the left.

Matata stepped up to calmly roll his right-footed penalty to Hudson’s left as the goalkeeper went the other way.

Watts, meanwhile, is not renowned for his goalscoring but his 62nd minute clearance left Whincup red-faced.

Manager Tony Burman even revealed that Watts declined a goal bonus when he signed for the club in September.

But his second goal for the club came from a looping clearance up field from two yards inside his own half as the ball bounced over Whincup’s head and dropped into the net to send the home fans into raptures.

Former Dartford defender, Adlington, playing in the heart of defence, blotted his copybook when an incident with Hayes sparked the seventeen-man brawl.

Adlington punched Hayes twice as his opponent laid on the ground after both players tussled for the ball.

During the brawl, May retaliated on Adlington and after calm was restored, the three match officials discussed the incident together out on the pitch.

The referee took time to brandish straight red cards to  Adlington, then May and then Matata received a yellow card.

Cass did find the back of the net with nineteen minutes remaining but the flag had already been raised before he glanced home Hayes’ free-kick.

Carruthers, playing the ball out of defence, with Martin chasing him, played a sublime diagonal ball to Matata out on the left flank.

Using his trademark pace, Matata cut in from the left but his right-footed 18-yard shot flashed agonisingly past the foot of the near post.

Whincup, meanwhile, pulled off the save of the match late on, spreading himself to deny Martin a goal on his last appearance for Dartford.

But he was not to be denied for long, as his trademark pace saw him burst past three defenders and his shot struck Allman’s outstretched arm and the referee had no hesitation but to point to the spot.

Hayes stepped up to fire his left-footed penalty into the bottom right hand corner with 47 minutes and 59 seconds on the clock – just 121 seconds from the end of this enthralling contest.

At the final whistle Martin walked up towards the Darts faithful behind the goal as they gave him a well-deserved ovation.

I’m sure the Darts fans would like to wish Martin, arguably the most talented footballer in Kent, all the very best as a professional footballer.

I’m sure every right-back that his terrorised would like to wish him well also.

But you had to feel sorry for Ashford for losing such a great game of football.

What a gutsy come back from Dartford. Certain players work rate never gave up the players who standed out for me over the last couple of games Eddie and Ryno. :-D

But as a couple of you have already stated yes we do leak goals.

A comment taken from the Ashford site by one of their supporters named John P:

I am sure I am not alone in wishing the Darts every success in the future. They have a ground and support of Conference standard and are more deserving of our best wishes than "Douvre".  :-D
