Firstly you have to say job done and 3 points from a game which had very little football played on a hard bumpy pitch and thankfully Hastings were no better than us with balls in the air for most of the game.

Their keeper was nervous early on missing high balls and struggling to punch clear, but from one such ball we were surprised to see him fall to the ground after fumbling the ball under pressure from Jay and with no whistle from the referee Cassie lobbed the ball in over the head of a defender on the goal-line. (For a moment everyone paused players and crowd but still no whistle and a signal to go mad and celebrate)

With both full backs having a poor game and neither getting tight to their opposing forwards and giving the ball away (sorry Hunky can't agree about Brad) it was left to the two central defenders to get the ball and clear under pressure.

Hastings goal came from from the best move of the game, down the left side, the winger had time and space to turn and flick the ball past Brad and into the path of another player who ran on through leaving Guesty to chase him into the box and one on one with Tony he fired home.

But although the match from there on was never pretty we didn't let our heads drop and didn't give up and after Haffie came on for Eddie who was either winded or had picked up a knock, we applied more pressure and looked the more likely to create scoring chances.

Then somehow from a cross into the box from the right the ball flew across the goal to the far post and Steve Bruce powered in a header and our players went wild, rushing behind the goal to celebrate with the fans.

This was the signal for Ryno to sit back down in the dugout, as he along with Briggsy had been warming up and the only substitution necessary was for Briggsy to come on and strengthen midfield for what we thought was 5 minutes left, however as always seems to happen when we want the final whistle to blow, we had around 5 minutes plus another 7-8 minutes of injury time.

The players wanted to win this game and we saw the effort that had previously been missing at Kingstonian and Chatham games, with gutsy battling for the ball and non stop running and once ahead for the second time we didn't look as though we were going to concede again.

Congratulations to Tony and the players they got the right tactics and the right result on the day and with 200-250 travelling fans cheering them on from start to finish it was the turn of the Hastings players to walk off with heads hung low at the end of the game.

Trev , good write up as usual. HH, Brad wasn't at his best, not sure right back is his best position, but just before the goal they had a practice of seding the ball past him for the forward to run on to, which thankfully ended up in the side netting.

Must agree that it wasn't a great performance, but it certainly wasn't ugly football. ( or pretty). It was solid (mostly) steady take no big chances type of football, which maybe we need to have a bit more before we get back to the great stuff.  The pitch wasn't smooth enough to have total control , but it wasn't the worst we have seen AND both sides had the same problem.

This is the type of commitment the lads are more than capable of and every one of them should be proud once more. We can just sneak in to the top 5 but we need two more of these. Just a shame cause if we had done this 5 games ago we might have won this league as once again no real consistant teams at the top, who seem certain to be champions.

The hardest thing about the game is picking MOM as every gave as much as the next man. For me jay just shades it for the simple reason he was trying to dribble past players in the box , and for a bit of luck and extra skill level, he would have had a couple. Seemed the best policy for scoring.
Bruce's goal was maybe the best header I have seen this season, and having virtually all the players celebrate with us behind the goal shows that they want this as much as us.

Well Done to the whole team.

Constructive criticism?? Don't get it. If it's still criticism, how is it constructive?

i thoughtthe players reaction in " highlighting "  carl bruce at the end when they came down to the fans at the end of the game was great as i do believe that they reckon on this guy and certainly his pedigree at B & EH suggests that he is a very good box to box player

he certainly has the build and looks bloody fit so i hope he stays with us has a cracking preseason and kikcs off with us nex tseason as he is probably 12 goals a season midfield man  !!!!!

i hope fellow dart fans get behind him and encourage him as i think he is a winner !!!!!!!!!!!

I thought it was great to see the Hastings goalkeeper come over to the Darts fans at the end of the game and shake hands with us all .He deserves a special mention on what must of been a heart breaking game for him. There are a lot of keepers we have met on our travels who could take a leaf out of this book (Ashford springs to mind)

A great result yesterday on certainly not the greatest of pitches and as others have said not the best or prettiest of football played from either side but this was a tough & real gutsy performance which is what was needed by the players to get anything from this game.

After taking the lead (a well taken goal from Brendan) we thankfully didn't give up and concede a goal straight away as we have done in the past especially last Monday but instead kept fighting away against a physical Hastings side who were very clearly a lot more used to playing on that very bobbly pitch.

With the ref not having a clue on what he was doing half the time and giving some very strange & dodgy decisions at times both ways the game couldn't really flow which partly spoilt it a bit, this seemed to be a completely different style of refereeing to the one we saw at Princes Park a few weeks ago.

Hastings managed to draw level in the 2nd half after strolling past Brad Potter at fullback and then running into the box and knocking the ball past the out running Tony Kessel for 1-1. At this point i thought it was going to end up a draw at best but oh no the lads certainly weren't going to give up, roll over and die this week and they just kept on going and with about 5 minutes of normal time to go from a freekick up pops Carl Bruce by the far post to powerfully head the ball past the Hastings keeper and into the far corner for the winner SUPERB.

The Darts crowd went absolutely loopy and celebrated the goal with almost every Darts player on the pitch as they all ran behind the goal to celebrate, you really could tell how much this meant to them and certainly to the fans. In a way i think it was partly a kind of apology from the players to the fans after last weeks games and everyone from the players to the management team & physio showed their appreciation to us supporters at the end of the game.

As KST has also mentioned the Hastings keeper was also very sporting at the end of the game and even though he'd been given a hell of a lot of stick through out the whole game he still applauded the fans behind the goal at the end of the game, shock some of our hands and said well done. TOP BLOKE & very sporting.

Well Done to all the players & management yesterday on this result as they have shown that although the overall performance might not have been great the determination and will to win certainly was and that is all we can ask of you.

I've given my MOTM vote to Brendan Cass, it was a very hard decision and in a way i think that either of the 2 centre backs probably deserved it but in the end i gave it for Cassys non stop efforts and continuous hard work.

Roll on next Saturday for our final home match of the season and fingers crossed what will be another 3pts plus some of the other results going our way.

We must win at home next week (where have we heard that before?)

Please correct me if I am wrong  xbow but the ref yesterday was in the program as Chris Salt and the ref that we all raved about against Dulwich at PP was Ashvin Degnarain. I think it would have been a very different game yesterday had it been the same ref :?

From the 4 or 5 postings that have been made on the Hastings site at least 2 possibly 3 of them have all said that we deserved our win yesterday and were the better team.

A couple did say that had they not had at least 3 of their better players missing then they would've probably won but they should be able to win whether they have some players missing or not.

A great result and a good day out with lovely weather.

Eagle has it right, you have Chris Salt as the wrong guy, tosser he was. In fact I'm surprised he didn't give a foul on Worgan for the first goal.
I agree, it was a dour game, but we did'nt give up. Mark Green gets my vote, at 4.30. he was still getting the ball out on the left and trying to hold it to give everyone else a breather. Jay gave it away too easily, put us back under pressure. But fair dues, I wouldn't like to have been out there.
Oh by the way, felt a twinge of guilt. Went back for the wife at Beachy head. This morning ( Sunday ), only cos the Police phoned

Something that i think deserves a mention was the number 5 who played for hastings at thurrock. How many premiership players do you think would serve in the bar as punishment for a 5 match ban? Top guy to chat to, not a bad barman either, think he was actually enjoying the 'punishment'.
By the way , he said if we buy him a house he would come to Dartford :-D
