CUSTARDS LAST STAND
« on: May 17, 2007, 01:20:05 PM »

Dear all,

As you know Dartford FC will be hosting the 1st "Keeper Wars" on 24th June 2007 at Princes Park in support of the NSPCC.

John MacRae (Dartfords Goalkeeping Coach and all round good egg) has approched me to enter and after much arm twisting has convinced me to enter as a fans representative.

Currently there are about 21 keepers listed to enter including James Tedder (Dartford), Kevin Hudson (Dartford), Steve Norwood (Ex Cray Wanderers), John Whitehouse (Chatham), Jimmy Simpson (Ex Dartford), Chris Connealey, Darren Kerr (Tonbridge Angels). Other keepers who have expressed an interest are Erith & Belvederes goalie plus Walton Casuals young keeper who impressed us so much a few weeks ago and other goalies from Kent league teams.

The object of the competition is to try and score as many goals with your alloted 10 shots as you and your keeping partner can against another pairing in a goal some 60 yards away. The paring with the most goals goes through to the next round.

I can confirm that spectators will be encouraged and that the bar will be open.

If anyone wants to help sponsor me to raise some extra cash on behalf of the NSPCC then please let me know. This is not how I envisaged spending my 39th birthday but it seems as good a reason as any to lay off the white wine, get fit and do something useful for a very good cause.

Hope to see you there - please help if you can.

I'll sponsor you, Steve. £5 for entering any good?

Thanks Gary,

I've worked out that I've got about 4 weeks to get fit and lose at least a stone in weight as well.

I'll have the family there on the day so any donations can go into a bucket I suppose.

Cheers Duke,

As I said, all contributions are welcome.

It's a good cause and I'm happy to do what I can.

Custard,

Still more than happy to join you, but I do not seem able to prompt a response from the organisers via the link in the original Email.

Phil,

The more the merrier.

I am currently lined up to partner James Tedder on the 24th. To get ready for this I am currently in training at home and attending training sessions with the DFC keepers and coaches. I am taking this very seriously.

We had a run through of what's expected on the day and it was tough yet fun. Very fast and action packed.

My sole intention is to give a good account of myself on the day, not  let JT down too much and raise some cash for a very good cause (NSPCC) before I'm too old to do anything like this again.

Most people's mid-life crisis involves them buying a sports car or a speed boat. Mine involves me attempting to seriously injure myself in the name of charity.

Phil,

I forgot to mention that the website has been very unpredictable. I suggest you contact John or Craig on their mobiles.

Thanks Dave,

I shall be collecting money on the day. If you can't make it then simply make a donation over the phone or e-mail to the NSPCC. It all counts and goes to the same place anyway.

Hope to see you there though - I'll need all the help I can get.

Hi all,

Just 18 days to go before Keeper Wars at PP, so I thought an update woould be in order.

That means I've got just 3 training sessions left up at PP to get ready. Plus I've now started jogging over Dartford Heath which is tough especially as I have to be careful of all the wierdos popping in and out of the bushes. However, the Police on mountain bikes don't seem to think that I'm dodgy and leave me alone!

Injuries picked up so far include 2 sprained fingers on my left hand, my right wrist took a bit of a bang and my right thigh hurts whenever I try to kick a ball or sprint. But apart from that I'm just dandy!

On the day I shall be wearing a bright pink t-shirt. Now if that isn't worth a pound or two for charity I don't know what is.

Online donations can be made to www.nscpp.org.uk if you can't make it on the day.

Hope to see you there.

Just under 2 weeks to go now and I'd like to thank all those fans who have already made donations.

I have had an idea regarding Kit Sponsorship.

So far my hat, t-shirt & keepers jersey have sponsors. However, the following items are still up for grabs:

Shorts
Socks
Boots
Gloves

If anyone is interested in being an official sponsor on the day the please contact me by PM or phone me on 07847 139780. It would be great if I could get some local companies to sponsor me, and as a result would get their names onto the forum as official sponsors. So what do you reckon? £10 for the gloves and the socks a fiver?

Please remember that if you intend to make your donations on-line you can sign up for the gift-aid scheme where by the charity gets extra money from the government.

Thanks for all your support,

Steve "Custard" Hookins

Thanks Trevor,

Better than squaring up to me on the day as I'll be knackered and in no state for fisticuffs!

Steve, I will be going to Braintree on the 24th and hope to see you in action on the day as I pass by. I will be armed with my fiver and expect value for money.

By the way is it Grassbank or Tedder as you’re sidekick?
