Cambridge City pre-season thread
« on: July 29, 2009, 12:04:47 PM »

Away to Cambridge City on Saturday, it's expected that Allan Tait may have some involvement in this match. I know a few of us will be going up for the weekend, but this is probably the best test we'll have this pre-season.

Good call - don't know why I had United down there, and by the time I'd noticed, you'd already posted everything about it.

Am looking forward to this one too . Have really enjoyed pre season so far and cannot wait until the season starts in full on the 15th. Looking forward to seeing a cameo from Alan Tait too this weekend.

From what i remember this was quite a tricky ground to find.Set well back off the main road and hidden by a large Carpetright.Have wonderful memories of playing i believe on New Years Day and a wonder free kick from Peter Taylor.

Just looking around their recent club history, and they are going to be a great test for the lads, as they were a Conference South side just two years ago, However, they were demoted to the British Gas Business Premier Division in May 2008.

Quote from: Wikipedia
In May 2008 City were demoted from the Conference South, after their ground failed an FA inspection, to the Southern League Premier Division for the 2008–09 season.

Also, this lot finished 4th in their league last season, so they will be a decent opposition, and a win against them will be a great result and will add to the already encouraging signs for next season!!

This game will be a good test for both sides, same level with the bookies expecting both to do well this season, with Cambridge City 3rd favourites (15/2) to win their league. Probably have been shorter odds if Farnborough (9/4) hadn't got in loads of higher league players (includes 3 from Ebbsfleet).

Looking forward to it as its another ground i haven't visited before.

I remember this as a difficult ground to get anything from, but things have changed a great deal from the days when Peter Taylors black and white army used to visit. There should be some good pubs in Cambridge, and I reckon you could make a good weekend out of this one.

Casting ones mind back to the Taylor days wasn't Cambridge City the one where we played them midweek at Watling Street and drew 0-0 in the title run in (87,88 or 89) and we got a penalty but there was no penalty spot so the ref stepped it out, then the GK protested and he stepped it out (was about 14 yards I remember) the ref then went with the GKs opinion and Steve Connor promptly missed the spot kick!

Could be completely wrong of course! Should be a good test this one but fancy us to do the business and of course August has arrived at last on Saturday so not long to go now!!

Enjoy the weekend all, remember this is more about the team bonding for the players/staff so do not expect too much from this friendly, in TB's own words;

“It’s a tough game, I’m not interested in the score, I’m just interested in my players progressing with their fitness.”
