The Pure DFC Music Thread
« on: December 18, 2009, 07:26:50 PM »

I have occasionally noticed some music talk on this forum and as we have a film thread I thought why not a music thread, so here it is!

Have you been to any gigs recently, what was it like? Who is your favourite band and why? What is your favourite ever album? Have you met a rock and roll star and what is your story?  Anything, whatever genre!

To kick start here is my magnificent seven (not The Clash song!) albums of 2009. discuss.

1- Journal for Plague Lovers - Manic Street Preachers (back to The Holy Bible days and Richey Edwards wrote the lyrics, mmm coincidence!?)
2- Our First American Friends - Tubelord (Kingston based nippers - check out their crazy time changes)
3- In The Cold Wind We Smile - The Xcerts (wee Scottish wonderment)
4- Mama I'm Swollen - Cursive (American indie from my favourite record label  - Saddle Creek)
5- Two Dances - Wildbeasts (musical marmite)
6- These Four Walls - We Were Promised Jetpacks (Surely the best band name this year, oh and I am a sucker for Scottish bands)
7- Bears - Sam Isaac (if only you could cuddle music)

My biggest disappointment has to be Biffy Clyro's new album Only Revolutions, I've only listened to five tracks and couldn't bring myself to hear the rest.  I hope Biffy return to their pre Puzzle days!

I can beat that by 1 Lardy, but only because I happened to see a WWPJ flyer in the Borderline a few weeks back.

Only bought a couple of long players this year, being a total metalhead it's not worth naming all, but anyone into that kind of thing oughta check out 'Insects' by Breed77. Quality from start to finish and the cover of Cranberries 'Zombie' works well.

I bought a Breed77 single on vinyl a couple of years ago, can't remember what it was I'll have to dig it out. I might have to listen to cover of Cranberries not heard that.

Oh and I missed Mumford & Sons off my list of good albums this year.

Me too (MSP) - but then I am over 60 and can't even remember when I last bought an album. Apart from those CDs that come free with the Mail, the last albums I had bought for me as prezzies were by Seaslck Steve (x2) and Dylan (Love & Death and Modern Times)

johndfc, chalk another one up for the Seasick Steve camp. Great stuff!!!

Can't say I've been too impressed by releases this year. Nothing readily springs to mind that stood out .... in fact I reckon the best CD I bought this year was Steve Wonder's "Innervisions" and that's 36 years old! An easier award however was the Gig(s) of the Year which for me would simply have to be the 5 times I was privileged to witness The Specials on their 30 year reunion tour. Awesome stuff  xtip

Indeed, the cover of Zombie is awesome. Good example of a band taking a song and making it their own, unlike so many of the manufactured pop ponces from X Idol or Pop Factor.

Also Rage against the Machine - Xmas number one.  xbow

I did some work round John 'Brad' Bradbury's house in Primrose Hill a couple of months ago (Specials drummer to those not in the know). Very nice guy indeed. His missus (Karen, if my memory serves me) is madder than a sack of talking carrots though!! Not my cup of tea all that ska stuff, but he's got some serious accolades for it and I'm well aware for the love on this very forum.

Totally agree, Blackened Sky has to be one of my all time favourites!

Look up 'Drugdealer Cheerleader', that was my old band! Three singles and an album later (all can be brought from bargain basements everywhere!) and still never made any money!

I really like Them Crooked Vultures, got some great stuff on their album and also the Dead Weathers are also well wortyh having a listen to (the connection between the two being Led Zep!).
