its an on going situation in that surely from 5 subs you can afford a specialst player for the GK position ,  its just that the vast majority of GK dont want to sit on the bech for 95%+ of the season , really only chance of getting on is IF the GK gets injured

AND

WHY - does a manager need to have 5 outfield players on the bench as surely 3 changes from 4 available  subs should be enough choice  ?????

I personally prefer a specialist GK on the bench

I agree Duke, I was just saying that it's not that big a risk if you don't.

In a way I can see where Ronaldo is coming from on the goal keeping subject and I don't want to appear to be over exaggerating the risk of not having a keeper on the bench.
However, along with The Duke and others I would be much happier knowing that there was a substitute keeper in the side.
JohnJ raised a very good point when he remarked that the ref could have sent off Andy Young when he conceded the penalty.
If that had been the case it would have been a 6th minute dismissal and, to be honest, the way Ashford came at us I don't think we would have picked up all 3 points if any at all.

I understand that it is comforting to have a replacement on the subs bench but I suppose the instance you have quoted highlights the reason why we didn't need one. i.e. He wasn't sent off and generally they rarely are at our level. We can't always account for what-if's.... Its about managing the risk.

What I don't think any of you take into account is the fact that a second keeper seating on the bench for a season is not what any player want's to be doing. this is slightly different with out field players with team tactic's
and sub's coming on. Normally in any team there is someone who can cover the keeper in an emergency.
I rest my case right of wrong.

Hence Derren's move to Sittingbourne (?Chatham?) and Kessie's move to Cray, presumably.

Not sending Any off was one of the few decisions that the Ref got right.

Yes Andy did catch him, but the ball and player were going away from the goal so I assume that's why he stayed on. Also thanks to the state of the pitch, once Andy ha started sliding, he couldn't stop.

There was no deliberate foul or intent.

I am sure that the longer-term supporters will remember us starting an FA Trophy match with no keeper in the squad.  Sadly, the result possibly reflected the situation that afternoon.

Come on you DARTS!

I know this was 10 years later but at least Martin was better than Broderick Tucker. Remember those Boston games!

This guy was worse than Grassbank and Custard put together.

If I remember correctly we played Margate in the Kent Senior Cup with a defender in goal (think it was Mark Keen!?) and we won 6-1. Please correct me if I am wrong.

That's right Stu and the funny thing was that we went 1 nil down.

Phil, I was actually paying you a compliment there. You and Steve are far better in goal than Broderick was.
