Reading "The Football Factory" by John King - I get through a lot of books - and I'm astonished by how poor it is.

I quite liked the film, and was hoping this would be more expansive on the characters, but I've just come out of an entire chapter on someone's day trip to Southend, talking about pirates and going on amusement rides, followed by a chapter entirely on some old dear who works in a launderette... and that's without going into the actual writing style, which looks like someone has jotted it down on a fag packet ohno

Gary, hopefully I can help you save several hours of your life by warning you off King's "Headhunters" & "England Away" - both utter bollo... nonsense.  xshake xshake xshake

Yeah, Gary, I noticed that. I was just trying to save you several hours of your life by warning you off reading John King's "Headhunters" & "England Away". I believe the phrase I used in my original post was "utter bollo .... nonsense  xshake xshake"

Anyone out there into Carl Hiaasen?

Yeah, not sure if read anything though. Will research as looking for good books for Holiday, want a Auto/Biography and a quirky semi fiction read.

Talking of football books, I've still got Ian Ridley's "Season in the Cold" sitting on my bookshelf. Even though the book is 18 years old now (1992), I enjoyed reading it so much first time round that I'm thinking of reading it again. For those whose memories go that far back, there are some famous names to be recalled.

Just ploughing my way through the new Stephen King epic, (879) pages called "Under the Dome" .Was a SK fan from Carrie onwards but lost interest during his Faries and Hopgoblins period .This is a good read but a little lacking in originality and it feels as though he is just trying to rewrite "The Stand" (probably one of my favourite ever books) But i suppose at least he has stuck to his tried and trusted formula re character development unlike James Herbert who has slipped so far in my estimation recently (his books are now just cheap pornography) Rating 7/10

I agree - love King's books (Dark Tower series / Stand are two of my favourite series/books) but couldn't get into Under the Dome. Doesn't help that it's HUGE and I just didn't care enough about Dale Barbera (Stu Redman is the ultimate reluctant hero)

I have always found with Stephen King that you really need to persivere with them, they are always seem to be slow burners. I thought Bag of Bones was a good one of his, took a while to get going but really good once it did get going!

Lardie, The Bone Collector was a Lincoln Rhyme novel, but he has done a load more Rhyme novels since. Deaver alternates between Rhyme and Katherine Dance novels, equally as good. But me and the wife like Rhyme's better. Deaver is also writing the new James Bond novel.
Johndfc, Kings 'Under the Dome' was a load of pure d crap. But agree with you on 'The Stand' being one of his best. 'Salems Lot and The Dead Zone' were the others. All early stuff, his recent stuff has been terrible.
Fevre Dream by George R R Martin and Lucifers Hammer  by Niven and Pournelle are excellent reads along with 'Fade out' by Patrick Tilley, and Dan Simmons 'The Terror' worth a look.

I enjoyed Lucifer's Hammer - picked up a copy in Dublin a few years back and don't regret it. One of my favourite books of all time (and one which I feel would work as a conversion to film) is State of Fear by Michael Crichton.

SK's Duma Key was one of his worst and put me off. I suppose it was meant to be enchanting but for me was just long and dull - and I am a fan. Dreamcatcher and Rose Madder are two of the best IMO. Reading Mark Radcliffe's biog at the moment - the man is a humble genius biggedy biggedy bong so it is.

Cough! Splutter! I was 'aving a drink then!   Blimey DA Mikey, I do not Adam & believe it! I didn't know Scrawn had written a biog. As a M&L addict I shall endeavour to purchase this quality item. I have the spoken word of his "Diary of a Rock 'n Roll Nobody" which is hilarious....is this the same thing?

Fancy a brew?!

Heh heh, knew it'd be you KP  Don't think it's the same thing - the wife bought it me cos I still coin all the adages at every possible opportunity! Good to know there are folk who still revere their work, although in honesty I've not followed their onward careers post R1 - must grumble.
