So who was the previous owner? Why is he no longer in the picture? And who was the new owner going to be and why has he pulled out at the last minute? All these questions and more will be answered in the next episode of "Soap" (for those young enough to remember Billy Crystal in his early - TV - days).

Rather than picking on teh small clubs, perhaps they could clear it out at the top first. Lets face it, the smaller clubs only do it to compete at a higher level. Thank god we dont (get into finmancial difficulties, not compete at a higher level).

I just think the HMRC are going after everyone, Big or Small. After the verdict in the Portsmouth case, I think they be more determined to get anyone. At this level the running of a club is mainly down to one or two people, so could be deemed as easier to go after, than rather take on a big club with lots of financial interests.

How about they just pay their tax and NIC?

Then HMRC would not have to go after them.

Why should people who do pay their tax and people who have no choice in the matter subsidise those who think they can pick which laws they will obey?

Don't forget a short while ago it was only down to our board that we managed to pay an outstanding tax bill.

It'd be interesting to know in this and similar cases how much the amounts HMRC are owed is corporation tax/VAT and how much NIC. If it is mostly the latter, this would seem to prove pretty conclusively that the player wage bill is too high relative to the size of the club and its attendances - which will come as a surprise to no-one.

Looking at their forum it states that they have already paid 30k and they owe another 55k. The fans are hoping to find out more tomorrow.

HMRC will go after any debt they think they can recover. It's probably a better bet for them to recover say £50K from a non-league club with their ground as an asset than it is say £5million at a premiership club with hundreds of other debtors competing for a slice.

The fault though, as others have said, is entirely with Welling United F.C. for allowing the situation to develop in the first place.

When it comes to debts, doesn't HMRC have a first bite of the cherry??

In principle, yes. But the problem with football clubs (or league clubs, at least) is that league rules state that, in the event of a winding up or the like, all football debts (unpaid players' wages, transfer fees etc) have to be paid first, even though  under tax law HMRC is supposed to have first bite of the cherry.

The Conference authorities have now deducted five points from Welling after a  misconduct hearing. It appears that Welling submitted inaccurate financial records to them.
