It was 1983.
The "beffuddled" defender was Bobby Arber and that was the first goal.
We equalised with a penalty by Joe Simmonds and then Millwall scored the winner a few minutes later.

Exactly as Ronaldo says.

A Millwall attacker apparently shouted "leave it Bob" to Bobby Arber.

You could generally rely on Joe Simmonds to score from the spot. I thought he was a good player for us in that era and keeping this vaguely related to the thread I think we signed him from Bishops Stortford.

You're right Stoat, we signed Joe Simmonds and Terry Sullivan from Bishop Stortford soon after they knocked us out of the Trophy semi final.

A very enjoyable game of football and a much needed 3 points. Well done everyone as this was ultimately a great all-round team performance. For 20 mins however, the game could have gone either way, but Andy Young was excellent and kept BS at bay ... as clear a MOTM as any you'll see this season. (Nice to hear the match sponsor agree and pick a sensible MOTM for a change).

Having survived that shaky start, the Darts went from strength to strength and eventually won at a canter. For me, the key to the huge improvement over Saturday was Champion in the centre of midfield. It wasn't so much his individual performance, as good as that was, but the effect his inclusion had on the shape of the team. i.e. With Champion and Shinn we have enough quality and MOBILITY to play with just two central midfielders and this allows us to push more men forward. Consequently it was a much more positive looking system which was ultimately rewarded with the victory.

Once again, it's clear that TB has assembled a squad with real quality and I hope this win inspires us to "have a go" at everyone we play rather than perhaps being a little over-cautious. If we come unstuck a few times then so be it, but fortune favours the brave and I think we should go out there with all guns blazing and have the courage to see how good we are.

Anyway, we are up and running and it's going to be a long hard season but it's going to be a lot of fun.

Can'r remember seeing a single mention of the ref on this thread so far. So that must mean he had a good game, yes? (Apart - maybe - from booking Danny H for diving). He certainly wasn't full of his own self-importance. Maybe he wasn't being assessed  xwhis. Best ref we've had in our (albeit not very many) games so far?

agreed I thought he refed the game very well, he probably did make a mistake  [ players make plenty during a game ] on dannys booking but it was NEVER  a penalty anyway

on the question of refrees , P Harris is scheduled to ref the ebbsfleet game , some of us saw him have a really good game at chatham [ darts was called off] in front of 130 fans and then within the next week he refered us at PP in front of circa 1000 and had a mare , this makes me nervous about this saturday in front of 2500+ fans

fingers crossed !!!!!!

ALSO
The best ref I have seen in the past 3 years [ at ;east] was a certain MR Dungaevin who was excellent and I cant really belive he is still refing at this level , can only assume he is using his " loaf " and NOT sucking up to the stupid FA rule book

For a variety of reasons I was unable to get to this match as originally planned. Having read the reports and watched the video I'm now wondering whether bit would be better for the team if I stayed away from Saturday's match too!

agreed   , whilst burnsy didnt have a prolific finish to the end of last season or blast them in early this season  , he deserves the chance to play in a front 2 as so far he has been up front all alone and not fair to judge [ or drop ] him on this basis !!!!!!!!!!

with sheringham back , harris on fire , rook [ hopefully] returning to form and burchell fulfilling his potential  , burnsy will have some hot competition which can only be great for the team and results

UP THE DARTS

Burch will be 'fulfilling his potential' back at Tonbridge Angels from Saturday.
