Another Club Down The Pan :(
« on: September 08, 2010, 02:53:54 PM »

Ilkeston Town have got the boot now. When will the bookies start offering specials on "next club to get liquidated" or "guess the number of winding up orders". Being realistic a lot of these clubs have none but themselves to blame for irresponsible spending habits but its never nice to see lower league clubs go down the pan like this and it seems the Winding Up Wagon is gathering strength with every year :(

This one should hit closer to home for us, what with it being T-Bon's previous club. Very sad news, and very disturbing... should club's like Welling be even more worried, given that a club from this level has now gone?

...wel maybe it's not over yet ..they've lodged an appeal and as such the FA  will  allow their  FA  Youth Cup game to go ahead tonight ...seems shocking that a club can go under for owing the equivalent of what most Premiership stars earn in a week   xshake xshake xshake

It's not good to see, many did say, in previous threads, that the HMRC would be going after anyone this season regardless.

Sad to see non league clubs go under but there is always a reason, live within your means, don't borrow what you can't afford, don't gamble on success either, prudence!

Apart from Portsmouth etc. It's beyond belief how that club is still going.

Absolutely spot on Gregg.

Ilkeston were known to be paying very high levels of wages during the past season, no doubt funded by a wealthy benefactor. He might have either lost interest, gone bust himself, or in Croydon Athletic's case, got arrested!  That's fine if you have some sort of contingency in place, but when the sugar daddy walks away, the club can't even afford to pay the groundsman, let alone the tax bills and they will go under.

I've a feeling that there will be quite a few more clubs going this way over the next couple of years when the effects of the recession really kick in (you ain't seen nothing yet - believe me!).

As these clubs are clearly incapable of managing their own businesses properly, surely the FA needs to get involved and make sure clubs operate wihin their means more. Perhaps insisting that they can demonstrate that at least 50% of running costs (incuding players wages) are met through the operation of the club, and not from the owners pocket?

What ever happened to the FA's "Fit and Proper" football clubs' owner's checks - or did that initiative have just about the same amount of teeth as the FA's other brainchild "Respect"?
