Maidenhead Away - 30/4/11
« on: April 25, 2011, 10:11:58 PM »

My first match thread and as far as i can remember this will be my first visit to Maidenhead.
Could be interesting as they need something from this game to ensure they retain there BSS status.

If Thurrock were to win at Farnborough, which seems unlikely, then Maidenhead would be relegated if we beat them. I'm sure they wouldn't want to leave anything to chance so they would probably be delighted with a draw which would guarantee them safety.

There's still a few issues to be decided next week and even Dover aren't completely out of the promotion picture. It's not inconceivable that ...

Welling 1 Basingstoke 1
Hampton & Richmond 1 Chelmsford 0
Dover 4 St Albans 1

... and sacre bleu, Dover are in the play-offs.

.... okay, I admit it's pretty damned unlikely but it is possible.

Last league game of the season. Party atmosphere. A very winnable match (providing the Dover team turn up and not the Bromley one). Ground (the oldest in the world) 2 minutes from the station. Lots of pubs compacted into the town centre a few minutes walk away. This has the potential to be a great away day. I'll be in the Greyhound for breakfast around 11.30am and doing the rounds in the name of pub research before hitting the terraces. Lets go out in our usual end of season awayday partying style!

According to their website:

No parking at the ground or neighbouring streets.  Have to use municiple car parks if you're driving.

Does anybody think that mondays kent senior cup final will have an input on the team selection Burman chooses?

Sorry to challenge you RogerB but the oldest ground in the world is reported to be Sandygate, the home of Hallam F.C. who are the second oldest soccer club in the world (Sheffield F.C. being the first).

It is claimed that Maidenhead's ground holds the distinction of being the ground that has been in the longest continuous use for soccer in the world - slightly different.

How come that Hallam and Cray Wanderers (according to the wording on the wall facing you as you (used to) go into their old Oxford Road ground) both seem to claim to be the second-oldest football club in the world?

Constructive criticism?? Don't get it. If it's still criticism, how is it constructive?

Soccer or association football, to distinguish from rugby football! Like Hallam, Cray Wanderers was also established in 1860 and claims to be the second oldest club in the world.

So who did they play then? Was it the old Cray V Sheffield derby in those days?

Apparently, from 1860 Sheffield played Hallam in what became known as the Sheffield "derby", after which about 20 clubs were founded in that area. Cray Wanderers played friendly matches against both Sheffield and Hallam in 2010 to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

I'd often asked myself that until I came to the conclusion that the first "clubs" must have played against either scratch (eg pub) teams or teams that were not set up in formal club form. After all, it would have been a long way to go for Cray to play Sheffield in those days!!!!

There would have still been older clubs than Sheffield and Cray for them to play against, they just don't exist today
