To be fair to South Eastern, despite them being a poor network, when the weather is hot and then cold and then hot again in the space of a few days, the points do have a serious issue, being metal. Basic science should give you the answer. The points tend to stick and I have been to derailments caused by this before. It's unfair to blame the train operator if it was a problem such as this. And there would not have been much the driver could do either. It's just unfortunate, and would still be far more efficient, punctual and comfortable than an Indian Railway. We have laws that would make most of their travel and trains void.
And despite the frustration, getting off the train put more than one persons life in danger.
That said SE Trains has many issues that cause plenty of delays which I am sure you will experience once again over the next few months.
As someone who works on the railways, take my advice, buy a motorbike, makes the journey so much easier
On Monday my thoughts would have been ...
The fares are outrageous, the trains stink, they're too hot in the summer, freezing in the winter and they are over-crowded to a level that wouldn't be allowed if we were cows and not people .... but at least they don't put a bolt through your head when you get to your destination.
Also, when it snows with the wrong kind of snow or is too hot or too cold or rains a bit or it's autumn and there are slippery leaves on the track, etc, etc, they are incapable of providing relevant and accurate information.
I agree that most of the staff seem okay and that the shambolic third world service may not be their fault, but it doesn't alter the fact that it's a crap service. I do have one gripe with staff though, and that is I have repeatedly seen blatant aggressive fare dodgers go unchallenged whilst minor transgressions by softer targets are treated with zero tolerance. Basically, if you're a skinhead with big boots, a bad attitude and "anchovy" tattooed on your forehead you can travel for free and nobody says jack, but if you're a slightly less threatening ticketless passenger who boarded the train at staff-less station with a broken ticket machine, you're very likely to get done for a £20 fine.
Today I've calmed down a bit and think ...
The trains are reasonably safe and 75% of the time I can get to and fro work without too much hassle. All the things above are still true though and South Eastern are still a bit rubbish.
