Dartford

Dartford v Thurrock

0

Dartford complete their trilogy of games against sides in the bottom four on Saturday when they host Thurrock.

The Darts will go into this weekends fixture on the back of four straight victories in the Conference South which has seen the club rise to second spot. With two games in hand Dartford will be determined to reduce the eleven point deficit on league leaders Woking. In between the league matches Dartford also won a cup tie and over the last five competitive games have scored an impressive 16 goals.

Thurrock on the other hand have a deficit of their own to make up. The Fleet prop up the rest of the league table and are seven points from safety. The Essex club have failed to win in their last nine league fixtures but have drawn their last three.

Former Dart Adam Burchell is denied a goal in last seasons encounter

Last season The Darts met Thurrock as favourites when the played at Princes Park. The Fleet were in the bottom three, had just lost 6-1, 7-2 and departed company with their manager Greg Lincoln. This season the story is similar with Dartford in a higher position than twelve months ago and Thurrock at the bottom without a permanent manager. Grant Gordon is part of the management team and he helped mastermind Thurrock’s 1-0 win last season, with the winning goal coming from former Dart loanee Matt Bodkin.

Thurrock started the season managed by former Dartford striker Robbie Garvey but he left the managers post last month and Lee Goodwin has taken charge until the end of the season. Throughout December The Fleet have signed numerous free agents and loan players in an attempt to avoid relegation, a feat they achieved last season due to the demise of Rushden and Diamonds.

The Fleet have still struggled to pick up points since the change in management and lack goals, managing to net just twice in 540 minutes of league football. However, manager Lee Goodwin believes his side are a ‘whisker away’ from a win and his side just need that extra ‘spark’.

Earlier in the season, Dartford comfortably beat Thurrock 3-0 at Ship Lane. Jacob Erskine opened the scoring with his first for the club on 51 minutes, James Rogers netted five minutes later and Jack Pallen wrapped up the win four minutes from time.

Team News

Connor Essam scored his first Dartford goal on Tuesday night and his loan spell has been extended. Tom Champion returns from his two match ban to increase Tony Burman’s options. Former Dart James White will be available to select for the visitors.

Dartford

Staines Town v Dartford

0

A second journey to Middlesex in three days awaits Dartford on Tuesday night when they take on Staines Town at Wheatsheaf Park.

The Darts will hope to make their game in hand count over the teams above them with a three point haul. The Swans have picked up some excellent results in recent weeks and continue their fight for survival at the bottom of the Conference South.

Ryan Hayes celebrates scoring from the spot

For a successive match one of Dartford’s mid season signings will be facing his former club. Goalkeeper Louis Wells played against The Darts earlier in the season and ended up on the losing side. Dartford came from behind at Princes Park back in September when Adam Everitt scored a penalty with eighteen minutes played. Undeterred by the deficit The Darts fought back in the second half. First Ryan Hayes was brought down in the box, he stepped up and tucked the spot kick away to draw the sides level. Then, in the 73rd minute Tom Champion went up for a corner and his bullet header gave Dartford their first ever victory against Staines Town at the sixth attempt.

In last seasons meeting at Wheatsheaf Park, Staines Town ran out 2-0 winners. The league meeting was brought to life on four minutes when the home side went in front from a quick break finished by Andre Scarlett. The lead was doubled when Elliot Onochie cut into the box and set up Scott Taylor who made it two.

Dartford enter Tuesday nights Conference South clash in good form. One defeat in ten league games has seen The Darts maintain pressure on the sides above them. On Saturday, Tony Burman’s team had to come back from a goal down to defeat Hampton and Richmond 3-1 at The Beveree. James Simmons gave the hosts the lead inside ten minutes but Dartford continued to control the game. Just after the half hour mark Elliot Bradbrook’s looping header tied the match and the sides went in at the break all square. In the second half, Bradbrook scored his fourth goal in two league games with a stunning long range volley which could well win goal of the season. To secure victory Jacob Erskine netted yet again to add to last weeks hat trick in the cup.

Tony Burman was delighted with his sides  performance in difficult conditions, he spoke to PURE DFC and said: “I’m pleased for them because it was a very difficult pitch and the conditions were not so good with the wind. We had a warning early on, we didn’t clear the ball as well as we should have done and then didn’t charge the guy down who had the shot”.

Despite going a goal down Burman praised the teams professionalism and added: “They took the lead which put us under pressure. All in all we should have come in at half time with more than the one goal. Having said that the boys come out the second half and did the business”.

Louis Wells in action for The Darts

Whilst Dartford helped out Staines Town with a win against Hampton and Richmond, Staines Town have returned the favour in recent weeks. Prior to the league match against Woking a fortnight ago Staines had failed to keep a clean sheet in the Conference South and win back to back league games, now that has all changed. The Swans caused an upset two weeks ago when they travelled to the league leaders and won 1-0. On Saturday, Steve Cordery’s team were at it again and this time defeated Chelmsford City by a solitary goal at Melbourne Park.

Cast your mind back to our last match at Wheatsheaf Park and The Swans were challenging for a top ten spot with The Darts. However, the tail end of last season saw the Middlesex club win just twice in their final sixteen fixtures. In fact Staines picked up just one point out of the last twenty one available in 2010/2011. This season the poor form has continued until recently with two wins from the first eighteen league matches leaving the club in a relegation battle. Despite the wins away from Wheatsheaf Park over the past two weeks only Thurrock have a home record worse than The Swans this season.

Team News

Tom Champion will be out through suspension and Lee Noble who was substituted on the weekend with an injury will be assessed before Tuesday’s match and could feature.

Since Dartford’s last meeting with The Swans, Steve Cordery has added to his squad which includes the return of crowd favourite Ali Chaaban who shot to fame during The Swans 2009 F.A Cup run. Rhys Evans, former Swindon player of the year replaced Louis Wells back in November and recently Mo Shariff has joined The Swans on loan from Queens Park Rangers.

Dartford

Hampton and Richmond v Dartford

0

Dartford travel to The Beveree to take on Hampton and Richmond for the second time this season.

Saturdays fixture is important for both clubs as The Darts will be aiming to keep the pressure on at the top of the Conference South table. The Beavers are searching for points to keep them at bay from the dreaded drop zone.

Jacob Erskine takes home the match ball after his hat trick against Boston United

Saturday’s fixture at Hampton and Richmond will be the first in a run against teams in the bottom four. Dartford travel to Staines Town who are second from bottom on Tuesday night and entertain Thurrock who occupy last spot at Princes Park the following Saturday.

Burman realises that the next week of football presents a good opportunity to make up some ground on Welling United, Chelmsford City and Woking, he commented: “We have got three or four of the toughest games coming up because they are the teams around the bottom at the moment. It’s what we do against them sort of sides because that is where our bread and butter is going to lay in the next few months. These sides will be difficult to beat because they are fighting for their lives”.

Jacob Erskine will face his former club on the weekend after his terrific hat trick in a bruising cup tie against Boston United. Erskine took home the match ball in a 4-2 victory which earned Dartford a draw against Wealdstone in the last sixteen.

Tony Burman praised Erskine and told PURE DFC: ”He has been working hard to do well. He is a big lad and he has got to improve his work rate which we’re trying to do and he understands what we are asking him to do we can’t ask for anything more”, the Dartford boss added: “I’m pleased when something works like that and you can see someone working hard in training and he has got his just rewards, he scored a good hat trick”.

The Darts approach this weekend in good form having tasted defeat just once in fourteen league and cup games. Victory at The Beveree will be Dartford’s third in a row in the Conference South and sixth league matches away from home without defeat.

Elliot Bradbrook scores against The Beavers

Earlier in the season Dartford triumphed 2-1 over the Middlesex club with a goal from Elliot Bradbrook and a penalty scored by Charlie Sheringham. Hampton and Richmond managed to half the deficit when Erskine netted for The Beavers. A second victory against The Beavers will go some way to erasing the memories of last seasons results.

In the first meeting, Paul Goodacre was dismissed at The Beveree with less than ten minutes played and from then on it was an uphill struggle for The Darts. Dean Wells headed the only goal of the game on 58 minutes to win the match 1-0 for Hampton and Richmond. At Princes Park, Dartford were comfortably beaten 4-0.

Hampton and Richmond took ten league games to record their first win but since November they have started to pick up valuable points and climbed out of the bottom three on New Years Day. The 4-1 thrashing of Staines Town was followed up with a 1-1 draw with Tonbridge Angels and a creditable 2-2 draw against Sutton United. A third consecutive draw was recorded in the F.A Trophy when East Thurrock United held Mark Harper’s side 1-1 to earn a replay.

Team News

Connor Essam has extended his loan spell with The Darts which will give Paul Goodacre more time to recover which is going well at the moment. Tom Champion is suspended for accruing ten cautions so Jon Wallis could return to the starting eleven.

Last week Hampton and Richmond boss Mark Harper signed striker Adam Thomas from Chesham United and midfielder Esmond James from Farnborough. Lost Dan Thompson to Portsmouth and Joel Ledgister’s loan spell ended when he moved to Sutton United. Ledgister scored twice against The Beavers in their last league fixture.

Dartford v Boston United

Dartford return to F.A Trophy action this weekend with a home tie against Conference North side Boston United.

The Darts last played The Pilgrims in an F.A Cup match twelve years ago. That day the fourth qualifying round fixture ended 1-1 at Watling Street. Dartford bowed out in a replay having been defeated 2-1 by the then Conference side. The last league meetings between the two clubs were way back in the 1985/86 season. Boston United won 1-0 at Watling Street and 3-0 at York Street.

Bradbrook opens up the Havant defence and scores

Tony Burman’s squad have lost just once in the last twelve competitive matches and that was to league leaders Woking. An excellent away trip to Havant and Waterlooville has given Burman’s team more confidence having swept aside The Hawks 4-1.

Burman spoke to PURE DFC and said: “It was a really good performance, all the team was excellent, it was a good all round performance”. Specifically the Dartford manager praised captain Elliot Bradbrook for his two goals as well as his two chances stopped by Havant and Waterlooville. Burman was also delighted with Danny Harris’ work rate, commenting “he worked his socks off”.

Victory at Westleigh Park closed the gap on league leaders Woking to fourteen points who lost to lowly Staines at home. However Dartford have two games in hand and could close the gap to eight points. Burman added: “It’s too early to say the league is over, so many things could happen. We got three points back off them but we are a long way off, we have to believe”.

Dartford reached the last sixteen in the F.A Trophy last time and hope to replicate if not better last seasons performance. Burman is looking forward to the tie and the occasion, he said: “I’m deligted we are still in the trophy, it’s a big game. I’m hoping we can get near to what we got when we played Welling at home in the last game, it was a great atmosphere.

He continued: “Boston are a big club they have been up there, they’ve come down and they are trying to get back up again. It will be a tough game but we will go into it in good form. If we can get the supporters to support like they did against Welling then that will breed confidence”.

Being a Boston United supporter in last dozen years has been full of ups and downs. Currently occupying eleventh spot in the Conference North, The Pilgrims have seen off Workington and Hyde FC to reach this far of the F.A Trophy. On Tuesday night they were defeated by Bishop’s Stortford at home, losing 2-0.

The Lincolnshire club are now managed by former Premier League striker Jason Lee who was appointed as boss in May after a successful spell as Caretaker Manager. Lee still puts on his boots and has netted seven times in the league so far this term, only Marc Newsham with eight league goals has scored more for Boston United. In defence Jason Lee can rely on 41 year old Paul Bastock. The ex St Albans City goalkeeper will be familiar with Dartford fans after outstanding performances against The Darts last season.

Jason Lee in his Premier League days at Nottingham Forest

Boston United were founder members of the old Alliance Premier League in 1979 and stayed at the top of non league football until 1993. The Pilgrims best finish was third during the 1988/89 season but four years later they were relegated. Promotion back to the top flight was achieved in 2000.

After just two seasons and first as a professional club Boston fans witnessed a memorable campaign when Football League status was earned by the slimmest of margins. The Pilgrims went up as champions by goal difference. The Conference championship was tarnished by an F.A investigation in which Steve Evans (now Crawley Town boss) was banned for twenty months.

Five years in the Football League ended in dramatic fashion. On the last day of the 2006/07 season defeat at Wrexham relegated the side as Macclesfield Town stayed up. Boston United entered a CVA in that summer and dropped an extra division to compete in the Conference North. A season later after finishing tenth a second demotion left the club in the Northern Premier League. However, Boston United’s attempt to bounce back was successful when they were promoted via the playoffs in 2010 back to the Conference North after beating Bradford Park Avenue.

Road To Wembley

First Round

Brackley Town 0 Dartford 3

The Darts negotiated their way into round two with a comfortable display in Northamptonshire. Dartford were awarded a dubious penalty which Elliot Bradbrook scored from placing a powerful shot into the top corner. In the second half Lee Burns and Jacob Erskine traded one two’s up the pitch before Erskine curled a delightful shot in off the bar. Erskine then slid in to make it 3-0 and secure Dartford’s passage to round two.

Boston United 1 Workington 0

Marc Newsham scored the only goal in fifty eighth minute in a workmen like performance. Paul Bastock made numerous vital saves in the Boston United goal as The Pilgrims defeated Workington for the third time this season.

Third Qualifying Round – Replay

Dartford 2 Eastbourne Borough 1

At the second attempt Dartford knocked out Eastbourne Borough in a replay. Tom Champion’s long range effort in the second half was a stunning way to open the scoring. After a second goal from Danny Harris, Eastbourne Borough were awarded a bizarre penalty when two Borough players fell over each other. Former Dart Carl Rook scored a consolation goal which wasn’t enough to complete a comeback.

Third Qualifying Round

Eastbourne Borough 0 Dartford 0

Dartford’s F.A Trophy adventures started at Priory Road in blustery conditions. The Darts dominated the first half but had with very few chances. Jacob Erskine powered a header wide and a couple of long range efforts never really tested Clark Masters in the Eastbourne goal. Eastbourne’s Ben Watson squandered a one on one with Louis Wells in the second half and Dartford’s Adam Green hit the woodwork from a swirling cross. James Rogers almost won it in the last minute when his volley was acrobatically cleared off the line.

Boston United 2 Hyde FC 1

Scott Spencer gave the visitors a 1-0 half time lead on forty minutes when he slammed home a shot at the far post. On the hour Kevin Austin scored his second goal in thirteen years with a header from Ben Milnes corner. Hyde’s Adam Griffin was not pleased that the goal stood and received his second booking for dissent. Ian Ross whipped in a cross thirteen minutes from time for Ben Fairclough, who nodded the winner with a diving header.
